Tasmania is home to more than 70 distilleries. It’s handcrafted, small-batch, and shaped by landscape as much as technique.

Pristine water, clean air, and ideal grain-growing conditions have helped produce whiskies that rival those from traditional Scotch regions like Speyside and Islay.

At Barrel Lane, Tasmanian whisky is a regular feature of the club. We work directly with distilleries to release exclusive, one-off Tasmanian whiskies for members with limited runs.

When they’re gone, they remain part of club folklore.

  • Tasmanian whisky has always flirted with rebellion. In the 1830s, the island was dotted with legal and illegal stills. Until Lady Jane Franklin. Unimpressed by the excess, she convinced her husband to outlaw distilling altogether.

Her verdict was clear: better barley fed to pigs than turned into men behaving like them. And just like that, Tasmanian whisky went dark for more than 150 years.

  • The revival came in the early 1990s, sparked by one deceptively simple question from a Hobart surveyor named Bill Lark: Why isn’t anyone making whisky in Tasmania? In 1992, he overturned the prohibition and reignited an industry.

International awards followed, with distilleries like Sullivans Cove, Lark, and Hellyers Road cementing Tasmania’s global reputation.

FAQs:

Are Tasmanian whisky club releases repeated?

No. Tasmanian whiskies featured through the club are typically one-off or single-batch releases. Once shared with members, they aren’t restocked or repeated, making each delivery part of a limited chapter.

How can I access rare Tasmanian whisky releases?

Many Tasmanian whiskies are released in extremely limited quantities and never reach your local. Joining a whisky club like Barrel Lane is often the only way to access these bottles, with members receiving curated releases directly as part of the subscription.

Are Tasmanian whiskies available outside of whisky clubs?

Some well-known bottlings are available publicly, but many of the most interesting Tasmanian whiskies are one-off or small-batch releases. Whisky clubs work directly with distilleries to share exclusive drops that aren’t repeated or widely distributed.

Is a whisky subscription worth it for Tasmanian whisky lovers?

For anyone interested in discovery, a whisky subscription is one of the best ways to explore Tasmanian whisky. It removes the guesswork by offering curated selections, tasting notes and distillery information, often featuring bottles you wouldn’t otherwise encounter.

How often does Barrel Lane feature Tasmanian whisky?

Tasmanian whisky appears regularly in the Barrel Lane Whisky Club, depending on seasonal releases and cask availability. When a Tasmanian drop is ready, members are given access as part of the ongoing subscription.
